About this trip
The shortest of our cultural tours, designed for travellers with a tight schedule or a long onward connection. Four days is enough to take in Bhutan's two most iconic experiences — the Tiger's Nest hike in Paro and a day in the capital Thimphu — without the long mountain drives that come with travelling further east.
What you'll see
- Tiger's Nest (Paro Taktsang) on its 3,000 m cliff
- Tashichho Dzong, seat of the Bhutanese government
- The giant Buddha Dordenma overlooking Thimphu
- The National Memorial Chorten and the Crafts Bazaar
This itinerary skips Punakha and the central valleys; it is the right choice if you want a quick but high-quality introduction.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 01 Arrive Paro
The flight into Paro is itself one of the more memorable arrivals in aviation — only a small handful of pilots in the world are certified to land here, and the descent threads between mountain ridges with the wing tips seemingly brushing pine. Met on the tarmac with a traditional khadar (white silk scarf) and transferred to the hotel for check-in. After lunch, an unhurried introduction to the valley: visit Rinpung Dzong (the imposing 17th-century fortress-monastery on the riverbank) and the circular National Museum housed in the old watchtower above. Early dinner and an early night.

Day 02 Tiger's Nest hike
The signature day. Taktsang Monastery — the Tiger's Nest — clings to a vertical cliff face 900 metres above the Paro valley floor, where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated for three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours. The hike is a steady 5- to 6-hour round trip on a well-maintained trail of switchbacks through blue pine and prayer-flag-strung rest stops. Tea break at the halfway cafeteria, where the iconic view of the monastery first opens up across the gorge. Inside the monastery, several small lhakhangs are open for visit; remove shoes, leave cameras at the door. Hot-stone bath at a traditional farmhouse in the late afternoon for tired legs.

Day 03 Thimphu day-trip
Easy 90-minute drive to the capital, the world's only capital city without traffic lights — intersections are still managed by white-gloved police officers. Photo stop at the steel-cable Tachog Lhakhang bridge along the way. In Thimphu, visit Tashichho Dzong (seat of government and the central monastic body), the National Memorial Chorten where elderly Bhutanese circumambulate from morning to evening, and the giant gilded Buddha Dordenma watching over the valley from a hilltop. Quick stop at the Crafts Bazaar before the afternoon drive back to Paro for a farewell dinner.
