About this trip

The step up from the classic Paro–Thimphu–Punakha cultural tour. Adds the wide glacial Phobjikha valley — winter home of about 500 black-necked cranes from the Tibetan plateau, and one of the most distinctive landscapes anywhere in the eastern Himalaya. Eight days is enough to slow down at each stop without rushing through the headline experiences.

Highlights

  • Tiger's Nest hike on its 3,000 m cliff
  • Tashichho Dzong, Buddha Dordenma, the Crafts Bazaar in Thimphu
  • Dochula Pass with its 108 chortens and the eastern Himalayan view
  • Punakha Dzong at the meeting of two rivers
  • Phobjikha valley — wintering ground of the black-necked cranes (Nov–Feb)
  • Gangtey Goenpa monastery and the Gangtey Nature Trail

Best months: March–May and September–November. November–February for crane viewing.

Day 02 Tiger's Nest hike

The signature day. A steady 5- to 6-hour return hike up to Taktsang Monastery (the Tiger's Nest) on its sheer 3,000-metre cliff. The trail switchbacks through blue pine and prayer-flag-strung rest stops, with a tea break at the halfway cafeteria where the iconic view first opens up. Inside the monastery, several small lhakhangs are open for visit; remove shoes, leave cameras at the door. Hot-stone bath at a traditional farmhouse in the afternoon for tired legs.

Day 03 Drive to Thimphu

Easy 90-minute drive to the capital. Visit Tashichho Dzong (seat of government and the central monastic body), the National Memorial Chorten where elderly Bhutanese circumambulate from morning to evening, and the giant gilded Buddha Dordenma watching over the valley from a hilltop. Afternoon at the Crafts Bazaar and the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, where students train for years in Bhutan's thirteen traditional arts. If time allows, an archery match at a local club — Bhutan's national sport.

Day 04 Drive to Punakha · Dochula

Cross Dochula Pass at 3,100 metres with its 108 white chortens and (on a clear day) the eastern Himalayan view from Jomolhari to Gangkar Puensum. Coffee and apple pie at the pass-side cafe is a tradition. Descend through subtropical forest to Punakha and visit Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 at the meeting of the Pho Chhu (father river) and Mo Chhu (mother river) — the site of every royal wedding and coronation. Afternoon walk across rice paddies to Chimi Lhakhang, the small fertility temple where the surrounding houses are adorned with painted phallic motifs.

Day 05 Drive to Phobjikha · Pele La

An early start east, climbing to Pele La pass at 3,420 metres before dropping into the wide glacial bowl of Phobjikha — flat, golden-grass plateau ringed by darkly forested ridges, one of the most distinctive landscapes in Bhutan. From November to February the valley hosts roughly 500 black-necked cranes wintering from Tibet, accounting for about a third of the global population. Afternoon walk on the gentle Gangtey Nature Trail, with stops at the 17th-century Gangtey Goenpa monastery and the small but excellent RSPN crane interpretive centre.

Day 06 Phobjikha · drive back to Punakha

A leisurely morning in the valley with another walk on the Gangtey Nature Trail or — for early risers in winter — a dawn session at the central crane roost for the morning fly-out. After lunch, recross Pele La and descend back to the warm Punakha valley. Late afternoon free for an optional Class II white-water raft down the Mo Chhu (gentle floating, big valley views, no white-water experience needed) or simply rest at the boutique hotel.

Day 07 Drive Punakha to Paro

Recross Dochula Pass with one last view of the eastern Himalaya, if the morning is clear. Lunch in Thimphu and an afternoon stop for last-minute craft shopping along Norzin Lam if the group wishes. Continue west to Paro for hot showers and a celebratory farewell dinner at a traditional Bhutanese restaurant — a long, slow meal of red rice, ema datshi, momos, and ara, with toasts from your guide.
