About this trip
A focused east-to-west traverse made possible by the domestic flight from Paro to Yonphula. By starting in the east and working west, the trip moves with the cultural and topographical grain of the country — descending from the wild eastern valleys, where Bhutanese identity is at its most distinctive, through the spiritual heartland of Bumthang, and finally into the well-known western circuit at the end. The flight skips two long days of road transit; nine days on the ground is enough to take in the headline experiences without exhausting drives.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 01 Arrive Paro
Met at Paro International Airport with khadars and transferred to the hotel for check-in. Lunch and a quiet afternoon to settle from the journey. Light walking introduction to Rinpung Dzong on the riverbank and the National Museum housed in the old watchtower above. Early dinner and an early night — tomorrow is the Tiger's Nest hike, and the day after is the domestic flight to the east.

Day 02 Tiger's Nest hike
A steady 5- to 6-hour return hike up to Taktsang Monastery (the Tiger's Nest) on its sheer 3,000-metre cliff face. The trail switchbacks through blue pine and prayer-flag-strung rest stops, with a tea break at the halfway cafeteria where the iconic view first opens up. Inside the monastery, several small lhakhangs are open for visit. Hot-stone bath at a traditional farmhouse in the afternoon for tired legs.

Day 03 Fly Paro to Yonphula · Drive Trashigang
An early transfer to Paro airport for the short domestic flight (about 50 minutes) east to the high airstrip at Yonphula in Trashigang district. The flight banks past the snowfields of Gangkar Puensum (Bhutan's highest peak at 7,570 m and the world's highest unclimbed mountain) and is one of the most scenic short flights anywhere in Asia. From Yonphula, a 90-minute drive descends to the town of Trashigang — the easternmost dzongkhag, sometimes called the 'jewel of the east' for its strategic position above the Drangme Chhu river. Visit Trashigang Dzong, perched dramatically above the river, in the late afternoon.

Day 04 Drive Trashigang to Mongar · Khoma weaving village
A scenic 4-hour drive northwest through dense forest and across the Drangme Chhu river. The headline stop is the small weaving village of Khoma, where the women weave the most prized fabric in Bhutan — the brocaded silk known as kishuthara, used for the formal kira (women's robe) on important occasions. Each piece can take six months on the back-strap loom. We visit two or three weaver families; small textile purchases directly from the weavers are encouraged. Continue on to Mongar in the late afternoon.

Day 05 Drive Mongar to Bumthang · Thrumshing La
A long but spectacular driving day west across Thrumshing La pass at 3,750 metres — the second-highest road pass in Bhutan, dropping through dense rhododendron forest on the western descent (in late April and May the rhododendron blooms turn the entire route into a corridor of pink and red). The road descends and climbs through several climate zones in a single day; watch for blood pheasant in the upper forest and ibisbill on the river boulders below. Arrive Bumthang in the late afternoon — the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, home to many of the country's oldest temples.

Day 06 Bumthang valleys
A relaxed cultural day in central Bumthang. Visit Jambay Lhakhang, one of 108 temples said to have been built across the Himalaya in a single day in the 7th century by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo, and Kurjey Lhakhang where Guru Rinpoche left an imprint of his body in a meditation cave (kur = body, jey = imprint). Cross the suspension bridge over the Bumthang Chhu to the small but exquisite Tamshing Lhakhang, founded by the great treasure-finder Pema Lingpa in the 15th century. Afternoon at the Burning Lake (Mebar Tsho), where Pema Lingpa is said to have emerged from the water still holding a butter lamp lit.

Day 07 Drive Bumthang to Punakha · Yotongla & Pele La
The longest drive day of the trip, recrossing two high passes. Climb to Yotongla at 3,425 metres, descend to Trongsa for a lunch stop and a brief tour of Trongsa Dzong — the largest dzong in Bhutan, perched above a deep gorge and the ancestral seat of the royal family. Continue west over Pele La (3,420 m) and finally drop into the warm Punakha valley by late afternoon. Hot showers, a short walk to Punakha Dzong if energy allows, and a riverside dinner.

Day 08 Drive Punakha to Paro · Dochula
Morning visit to Punakha Dzong — arguably the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan — built in 1637 at the meeting of the Pho Chhu (father river) and Mo Chhu (mother river), and the site of every royal wedding and coronation. Recross Dochula Pass at 3,100 metres with its 108 white chortens for one last view of the eastern Himalaya you have just driven through, if the morning is clear. Lunch in Thimphu, with a brief stop at Tashichho Dzong and the Crafts Bazaar. Continue west to Paro for a celebratory farewell dinner — toasts from your guide and the group.

Day 09 Departure
Final breakfast at the hotel and transfer to Paro International Airport. Final khadars at the security gate and a last 'tashi delek' before you board. Most onward flights connect through Delhi, Kolkata, Bangkok or Singapore. Take with you the rare experience of having traversed Bhutan from east to west.
